Private Surgery
As a practice, we do not provide prescribing or monitoring after you have seen a private provider – this includes any private surgery that has been sourced both in the United Kingdom or abroad. We will not take on the prescribing and monitoring in the following cases:
Monitoring after private bariatric surgery.
Bariatric surgery is a complex medical procedure which requires regular blood tests under a specialist for the first 2 years post surgery. GPs are not skilled to offer this service and do not get involved for the first 2 years after a patient has had this surgery on the NHS. You will need to find a private provider to offer this very important after care.
Post-operative care after private surgery.
GPs are not skilled in post-operative care and you should make a plan with your private surgical provider on how the aftercare should be organised.
ADHD Private Services
GPs don’t prescribe ADHD medications and only do so under NHS Shared Care Agreements where the NHS ADHD service provides the monitoring required. ADHD medications are strong and can have significant side effects which need to be overseen by a specialist service.
Private Menopause Specialist.
GPs are trained in prescribing HRT. If the private provider’s suggestions fall into the licensed practice, we can take over the prescribing and this decision lies with the individual GP. A lot of the time, the suggested treatment regimes are given off licence, for example higher oestrogen doses or testosterone, and the private provider would need to continue prescribing in this case.
Private Weight Loss Service.
Weight loss injections like Mounjaro, Wegovy and Saxenda are not licensed on the NHS for weight loss. If you choose to purchase them privately, you would need to fund them and your provider has to make sure that you don’t have any contraindications to the medication.
We apologise for the inconvenience and hope that you understand the safety and funding implications. Our NHS contract clearly defines the clinical responsibilities.
