HEALTHY LIVING

Healthy eating and exercise can reduce your risk of major illnesses, such as heart disease, stroke, liver disease, type 2 diabetes and even cancer.  It can also boost self-esteem,  mood, sleep and energy, as well as reducing your risk of stress, depression and dementia.  Below are suggestions of both national and local services to help with a healthier lifestyle.  These details may change and up to date information, as well as other suggestions can be found at

Exercise Groups

Adults aged 19-64 should try to be active daily and should do 30 minutes of moderate exercise 5 times a week, as well as muscles strengthening exercises on two or more days a week.

  • Regular Free Health Walks are suitable for people who have not walked much recently, and are looking to be more active, or are returning from illness or injury.  Walks range from 30 minutes on good paths, to 90 minutes on more challenging terrain to build up activity levels.

  • Plymouth Healthy Futures run a number of exercise classes for only £1.

             The Exercise Referral Scheme is for people with long term health conditions to 

              Increase physical activity levels and improve health.  Run at the Life Centre and Brickfields

              Sports Centre for people with a range of health conditions including high blood pressure or

              cholesterol, stress or mood problems, joint or back pains, asthma, COPD or diabetes.  You

              are provided with your own fitness plan which may include gym sessions or group exercise

              classes.

                ○  Book an appointment with your GP to be referred

  • For diabetic patients, Circuits Class is suitable for everyone aged 16 years and over who has been diagnosed with diabetes. There will be a diabetic specialist at all sessions to help you exercise safely and to answer any questions you may have.  First session is free, then just £2.00 per session.

  • For cardiac and stroke patients, Plymouth Heart Beat is a reduced price gym aiming to help rehabilitation but also open to the general public to keep fit, gain a healthy lifestyle and prevent heart problems.

  • For adults with mental health problems and/or learning disabilities, Active For All is a service which supports and promotes physical activity in adults. They run a number of regular classes, as well as taster sessions in new sports.

  • For pregnant women, 

Pregnacise is a free exercise class, as well as postnatal classes from 6 weeks to 12 months after birth.

HEALTHY EATING

As a general rule, vegetables, fruit and starchy foods should provide the bulk of most of your meals.  The remaining part of your diet should be made up from dairy foods and protein foods, like meat or fish.  Foods and drinks that are high in fat or sugar should be avoided or reduced.

Head Space out-of-hours mental health drop-in support and telephone service

Head Space' offers an out-of-hours drop-in support and telephone service for people who consider they are approaching mental health crisis. Head Space is a non-clinical, safe and structured environment, where individuals can access peer support on a 1:1 or group basis and take part in activities to help them.

It aims to reduce reliance and impact on statutory services and is appropriate for anyone who feels they are approaching mental health crisis and is open to visiting the service and talking to people. Only acute mental distress, inappropriate behaviour or non-mental health related issues would suggest that the service isn't appropriate for someone.
